For Fire Departments
Fire Departments across North America have seen and used the Lifestick ( formerly known as the Emergency Friend Signal) with success and ease.
One statistic that is in need of improvement is the fact that over 80% of high-rise fire fatalities are caused from smoke inhalation. The Lifestick can help reduce these statistics!
We agree that the best action to take in the event of a high rise fire alarm is to evacuate the building immediately, however, not all individuals will/or can take these proactive measures. The Lifestick is a tool to be used in a situation when an individual or individuals are trapped in a room or apartment due to smoke.
If occupants decide to protect in place, or are trapped in their apartment, they are to slide the Lifestick under the door. During the Fire Department’s primary search, rescue crews will see the Lifestick in the hallway, this will indicate that there is someone behind that door in need of assistance.
The Lifestick is placed on the floor where there is the least amount of smoke. Also the Lifestick has a photolumenescent arrow which can be seen through smoke. This will also help locate a door in a smoke filled hallway.
In an emergency response situation, the Lifestick provides the Fire Department with an efficient Primary Search and reduces time when identifying trapped or immobile victims. No time is lost searching through empty rooms.
When hung on the outside of the closed door on the door knob, after the initial search, the Lifestick provides an indication to rescue personnel during the Secondary Search that the suite has been secured. The Lifestick is superior to the use of chalk to mark doors due to the Lifestick’s visibility and permanency.
Because of the Lifestick’s photoluminecent arrow, it is extremely effective during power outages, low light or smoke filled situations.
